Nutrition is an important aspect of breastfeeding. What you eat is what your baby gets through breast milk. If your diet consists of vitamins, proteins, calcium, and minerals, your baby is bound to benefit from it, and register proper growth.
A well balanced diet that is fresh and healthy is good for you and the little one. While deciding on the food to eat while breast feeding, take care that your menu consists of varied food items, so that you get different nutrients from different food sources.
Known healthy foods are good for you. Foods that please your taste
buds are good, except of course junk food, which has no nutritional
value. If you have a family history of allergy, you may be careful with
the kind of foods you eat.
Foods to Be Avoided While Nursing
The most common foods to avoid during breastfeeding are spices such as garlic, chili, cinnamon, and pepper; chocolate; vegetables such as cabbage, onion, garlic, broccoli, cauliflower, and cucumber; fruits such as prunes, cherries, orange, lemon, strawberry, grapefruit, pineapple, and kiwi.
Caffeine under 750 ml per day is fine, but not beyond that. While calculating your daily quota, include your medication and other substances as sodas, and teas that contain caffeine. Caffeine can affect your baby’s sleep and make him cranky.
Alcohol is to be avoided altogether while you are nursing. May be an occasional drink is acceptable, but nothing beyond that. High blood alcohol content is not good for your baby.
